The stir in the media today was the discovery that one of two "identical" rugs in the new Pinellas County, Florida Sheriff's Office building was just discovered to have a typo. But the first thing that grabbed my eye was the leaf motif in the background of the Sheriff's badge depicted. Are these tobacco leaves?

Crops and Vegetables: Each homestead grew a variety of crops throughout the year:
sugar cane, tobacco, corn, cabbage, sweet potatoes, watermelons, tomatoes,
cucumbers. “Truck farming” brought extra crops and vegetables to market helping to
serve the needs of the community and earning cash for the farmer. Most early
homesteaders were self-sufficient, growing the crops they needed to feed their families
and their livestock. Any surplus was sent to market or bartered and traded for goods
they needed.

Of all the crops listed in the Farm Life History Kit, only tobacco would have such a leaf form.

How many tickets do you have to write to pay for a custom rug like that?

I think 2 uninspected vehicles will cover the cost of the rugs up here.

Those are definitely tobacco leaves. Take a look at the actual badge (sans the sacrilege).

it's odd though. Reading the history of Pinellas county shows no sign of an importance of tobacco. While this was huge on the other side of the bay, Pinellas seems to have focused on citrus and cattle. Why would tobacco be on the badges if it's so irrelevant to the history of the county?

I've only found one reference making passing mention of tobacco. https://www.pinellascounty.org/Heritage/PDF/History-Kit-Farm-Life.pdf

The word, "tobacco," is not something one writes about with impunity. Even universities with active tobacco research programs are loath to utter the "T" word on their websites. At family gatherings, everyone knows not to mention Uncle Norbert, who was sent to the slammer for invidious deeds.
