last night a spread out the first batch to cool more and dry overnight...what I spread out was about as black as I think it is ever going to get, like tar . It was also not much intact as leaf ...not sure how to describe it but I am not able to spread it out as a whole or partial leaf anymore, maybe it was a little too wet still.
But, the Little Dutch batch smells incredible. The chocolate aroma...hope it stays chocolatey in smoke and taste as well.

ok , I checked the 24 hr batch(Little Dutch, Madole and Black Mammoth- all early mud lugs and damaged leaf). It dried out some over night and it relaxed into distinguishable leaf parts instead of the blackish brown mush I spread out . I feel better about the results now. I turned it and teased it so it can dry some more today. Still can't quite place the aroma it has. Slightly sweet and a tiny bit nutty like hazelnut. Maybe as it dries it will improve. I thought with the dutch in there I would get a hint of dark chocolate ,but its not smelling that way at all.

Next batch will be either Va Gold or Criollo98 and see what I get out of those.

Hello, I am new here. I have read his entire thread, I've been smoking since I was in my early 20's and preffer smoking my pipe a lot. I really like Captian Black pipe tobbaco a lot. My wife doesn't complain much when I smoke it like she does with some of the other kinds of tobbaco I buy so it works out.

I have tired to grow tobbaco a few times but rarely ever get it much more than knee high before it dies. I have not even tried for a few years now.

I joined this forum just to comment here. Well not really comment I guess, but to ask if already processed shredded cheap pipe tobbacco might work if I steamed it.

I have been buying big bags of cheap 'gold' pipe tobbacco and inexpensive black cavendish at the discount tobbacco store lately. The cheap black cavendish I have been buying is flavored and from what I have read here it is vanilla and sugar.

What I have been blending together is a lot less expensive than Captain Black and tastes pretty good to me, not as good as Captain Black, but not bad at all. Straight up the gold will make my whole mouth burn like. Blended with the cheap BC it's more mellow. Still get a burn because I simply smoke too much of the stuff but seems more satisfying when I blend it, so I dont smoke quite as much most of the time.

I have a notion to try at least part of a bag of the cheap gold stuff. If I do I will post how it comes out.

Uncletom,
Welcome to the forum. Your experience with steaming some bulk commercial pipe tobacco should be interesting. I suspect that it will darken the leaf, and possibly drive off some of the casings. Given that it's generally lower quality leaf to begin with, the steaming process may or may not reduce the bite.

Welcome aboard, I don't think anyone has tried this.
I will try steaming some of my shredded leaf tonight.
I figure I will put it in a colonder so l don't make a mess.
I will try VA Gold F/C
i think drying it out is going to be a Issue tho.

About twenty years ago, I lived in an apartment that only had hot water radiation for heat, so there was no airflow. I put some Lane tobacco in a pot of simmering water like what my mom used to do with potpourri. The fumes made me really dizzy and nauseous.

First of all, welcome fellow Illinoisian to FTT. I'm only about 3 hours east of you (I've been out to Poopys) . Trust me when I say growing tobacco in IL isn't that difficult. I grew my first crop last year and I came out filling 46 - 9 x 20 vapor proof bags with various mostly cigar varieties. I've made some cavendish and it wasn't bad but it could use some improvement.
I only smoke a pipe a few times ,usually it had been Capt Black ,but I rarely get mouth burn like you're describing. Only time I do is when I smoke a little too fast or toward the end of the bowl.

Thanks to all for the greetings,Well, my attempt was less than good. I have a bit of stainless steel screen that I put in the bottom of my stainless steel colander. I put a fairly decent hand full of the shredded tobacco on the screen put it in my 4 gallon stock pot and put that on the side burner on the BBQ grill outside. I put of a screen of cardboard box around the grill to keep the wind off the kettle. Once it came to a light boil I turned the heat down to where I could still see steam rising. Of course it was darn cold out so did not take much for me to see steam.I checked after two hours and there was barely any water boiled off. I checked again after 4 hours and the tobacco was moist to the touch and very warm but had not turned much of any kind of color.I refilled the pot turned the heat up to where the pot was at a gentle boil and went to bed. 6 hours later I checked again. The tobacco had turned a little darker so I stirred it up a bit refilled the water and went in to play world of tanks. About 12 hours into it I figured I had burned about half a tank of propane and the tobacco still looked about the same. I decided it just was not going to work for me and shut things down.I put the tobacco on a big cookie sheet and put it in the oven at 250 degrees for an hour. It was still damp so I gave it another hour. I put a pinch in my pipe and it smoked. Seemed about the same but with somewhat less bite. I may try it again when its not so cold out but this time I figure is a wash. Now that I'm retired I might try growing tobacco again.

Ha, that's my favorite pressure cooker pic. Uncletom, it's probably too cold out to make cavendish outside. You need hot steam not just vapors.

You can blow one up pretty easily by not turning down the heat, using the wrong pressure relief weight, not cleaning the little hole in the pressure relief system, using a bolt in the pressure plug on the lid, and probably a few other things I don't know about.

When my uncle Frank blew his up the special little plug in the lid had popped so he just put 3/8" bolt in and continued canning. The lid did not stick in the ceiling and the stove did not suffer much but it was exciting to be there for a few seconds.

When my niece blew hers up she had not cleaned the pressure relief tube and was using the wrong weight for the pressure relief. My pressure cooker is very old now, not quite as old as me but it has three different holes on the weight for various amounts of pressure. I always use the lightest weight when I use it.

A friend was cold packing a bunch of venison put it on the stove and went to the toilet while it got up to temp, on his way back something on TV caught his attention so he stopped to look at it. Shortly the pressure cooker blew the lid off because he had not turned down the heat.

So, like you said it happens,...

Quick question as I'm pressing my first Black Cav right now (exciting!!) Smells great! Could be a bit darker. Will post pics once it's done.

This was done in the pressure canner-sealed jar method. I took it out of the jar, moist tobacco with no standing water. I put it into a bag and started pressing. About 1-2 tbsp of dark tobacco juice was expressed.
This juice looks like it contains a lot of flavour and nicotine. Should this be reapplied to the tobacco after rubbing out and before drying it? Just looking at it looks like a lot of flavour will be lost if it is thrown away.
