Hey all, thought I'd start up a grow blog so no one has to wonder "what'n'blazes is that canadian doing?". Well, here we go. I've been blessed with the gift of some seeds (thanks Lakota) and several sprouts (thanks Jack in NB, still figuring how many will survive from being in the mail, lol). I've planted several hundred seeds into 1" cells with agro mix and have done the same with the sprouts. I've got some sprouts coming up that I put in a week ago, which is comforting. I only get a few hours sun in the window so tommorow I'll be switching on some fluorescents to help out. It's still too cold to put them outside yet. My main outdoor growing area will be 40mins away at my dads place, still don't know how many will go there, I'll have to wait and see how many actual plants I get going. The others will be given to several smoker friends who I've convinced to try growing and I'll probably get some into a few more local garden spaces. I have NO idea how this is all going to work out yet, I'm sure it'll keep me busy though lol. Curing will be another matter, if I make it that far, I'll figure something out I always do. Here's to it and good luck to all you other growers ;)

Welcome and good luck on your first grow. It is my firstyear too. My seedlings are in the single leaf dormant stage now. They appear to be doing nothing but are actually growing a root system.

Oh boy Knucks :p Actually it wasn't too cold this year. Yeah, Lakota and Jack have been a real help, I really appreciate it.

My starts are coming along nicely, primary leaves are filling out a little every day and the extra light has helped them green up a little more.

Went to visit my dad yesterday, a nice sunny day, took a cigar for the ride, it was nice. He needed some things moved around the yard so I was there to help. He started showing me places where I could put some tobacco. We've decided to plow a strip out behind the barns, maybe make it 8'X40'. So next weekend I'll go down, plow, till, fix up the dirt so I can plant in it. I'm not planning on fertilizing at all, at least not yet. We got good dirt in most places and where I'm gonna till used to be part of a cow pasture, many years ago.

No new sprouts yet, maybe tues, weds I'll start seeing some more.

Sooo, I got seeds poppin up like bullfrogs in a dynamite pond (so to say) guess I'm on track. Tomorrow I'll hopefully be breaking some new ground for the lil' fellers. Again, I'm not gonna fertilize or add anything to the soil, unless there's trouble but I'm not counting on it. I've probably got 3-4 weeks before anythings ready to go out.

Opinions are welcome, of course, it is my first grow after all ;)

whens your fall frost date Matty? Hopefully you will have enough time. Where I am is about mid of Sept. If you can get to that date you should have a decent crop. Might be touch and go but the experience will sure help for next year. There is a silver lining somewhere in those clouds.

September sounds about right, sometimes later. Round here I've seen the first frost as late as mid october, this day'n'age. This year I've pretty much put down as experience for growing baccy, next year, if I get seeds made, I will start earlier. Btw, I still have plenty of seed left, Lakota, thanks a bundle, really appreciate it. So, if this year is a bust (I doubt it will be) I will still have some seeds. Btw, progress on getting my buddy on board with tobacco prodction and cigars is coming along lol. Just might have another northern grower next year ;)

Matty if by some chance you do not get your plants to seed I have 9 different new varieties this year thanks to Doug. He sent me 9 different seeds, all burley. I am more interested in early maturing plants for us northern growers. If you want some of those seeds just let me know.

Seed list
Harrow Velvet
N126
Warner
KY10
Ky17
VA 510
N88
n777
N7371

These were what Doug suggested, as far as I can tell none are early maturing, but with an early start all of these should do well. I will also send seed to the FTT seed bank. Russ
