I do like smoking my pipe, although, I don't smoke it near as much as i'd like. I've always been a fan of the cherry cavendish from Borkum Riff. This pipe blend seems to be good most of the time but there does seem to be differences from one batch to the next where one is quite superb then another is mediocer.

I've tried other and the runner ups for a good aromatic is the Borkum Riff cherry liquer and the Mr. B's Wild cherry. In the BR cherry, there seems to be less cavendish then it's sister blend but still has a nice sweet taste to it. The Mr. B's cherry seems to be all cavendish (completely black) and is in such high case that you can't get a pipe going even with a #7 blow torch.

Out of curiosity, I tried blending all three together to see how it would taste and I liked it very much. the Cherry cavendish adds the aromatic distinct cherry note, the cherry liquer adds the sweetness, and the wild cherry balances it out adding it's unique flavour and smoothing out the other to blends.

These are the empty pouches. One thing I like about the wild cherry being in such high case is it adds moistur to the other 2 blends which are too dry in my opinion.

After mixing everything in a big bowl, I packed it rather tight in a storage jar. With all the pouches being 50gm by weight, I get 150gm mixed. I'm a happy camper.

I like the smell of BR cherry, not a big fan of the BR cherry liquor though. Mr. B's does case quite heavily in all their blends, they're good but are closer to smoking shisha in a hookah than tobacco in a pipe. Bought a pouch of the Colts pipe tobacco, another good drugstore pipe mix, burns easy and cool with lots of smoke, I like blending raw tobacco with it.

I guess the "room note" of that mixture will make you everybody´s friend.

I like some commercial pipe tobaccos for the fact that they make a good base for mixing/blending. Recently I took some Savinelli Cavendish, added my own Izmir and some cigar leaf (roughly 50/25/25 in percentages). A very complex smoke, every whiff brought something new.

Since there´s a starting point, it´s easy to wander off in different directions without the frustration of immediate total disaster.

My grandfather used to love cherry cavendish (Borkum Riff to be exact!)only he would take a pouch of cherry cav and a pouch of black cav and mix them . I have done the same with Captain Black , straight cherry just too sweet and the black mellows it out a bit , just right .

Looks great ! I assume that you intend to smoke that tobacco fairly soon and are not "cellaring" it long term as I don't believe that your jar is entirely airtight. That is the kind of jar that I keep next to my pipe rack for immediate consumption.
If you plan to put that tobacco up and age it for a significant time I would suggest a mason jar as it is indeed airtight. Just an FYI, mate. ;)

Then again, I can't really see whether you're sealing it off in some other fashion for long term cellaring? Perhaps using tape?

My favorite aromatic is old reliable Lane 1Q: Here's my review of it:

Lane 1Q:

I'm going to provide a brief review of a tobacco I'm sure most have tried at one point or another. And if you haven't tried Lane Limited 1Q you owe it to yourself to do so, if for no other reason than to be able to say you've experienced the number one top selling bulk tobacco in America over the past several decades.

The venerable "gold standard" of aros , Lane 1Q:

It's the smoke I keep coming back to unlike any other.
After a long day, feeling like a bowl full of succor sans surprises, there's nothing that compares to Lane 1Q. Goes equally well with coffee; a Guiness; pinot noir; rum and cola or a good Kentucky Bourbon. However, for me, a bowl of 1Q and a steaming cup of good dark Joe is hard to beat.

I've tried and indeed enjoy many aros including other Lanes and the highly acclaimed LJ Peretti "Blend 432" and "Boston's Best Cavendish", as well as Gawith and Hoggarth "American Delight".... yet I still keep a goodly supply of 1Q at the ready at all times.

Lane 1Q is everything that an aro smoker seeks : a jar aroma of soft vanilla, chocolate and raisins, easy pack and light, soft billowing smoke with gentle hints of vanilla playing in and out ....sipping it slowly calms the nerves and restores the soul. Unlike some aros, it's not heavily cased and is never goopy or gurgling in the pipe.

Tastes great in my treasured Nording Free Hand #2 but seems most at home in one of my trusty Missouri Meerschaum Cobs such as the Country Gentlemen (both finished and unfinished models) or perhaps my cool smoking Mark Twain.... I must confess that some early mornings, I will arise and immediately take a deep whiff of the marvelous aroma from the 1Q jar sitting next to my pipe rack. The delightfully redolent bouquet is my favorite form of aromatherapy.

The process of writing this review has set me off like a Pavlovian dog and whet my seemingly insatiable appetite for a bowl of this wonderfully unobtrusive, soothing, bite free, ever so mellow blend. Methinks I must now go brew a good pot of coffee and kick back in my man cave with some.
Cheers.

Some commercial, aromatic blends contain enough humectants (glycerin, PG) that they just don't dry out easily.

I have several 1 gallon glass jars with glass lids (not even a gasket)--the kind often seen on the counters of tobacconist shops. In one of those jars, I dumped a 1 pound bag of Chocolate Cavendish, by Dream Castle Tobacco Co. [super-cheapo stuff]. It's the only tobacco I've ever smoked in my whittled, applewood pipe, which I use only occasionally. After sitting there for two or three years, on top of my humidor in the living room, the tobacco in the unsealed jar feels almost as moist as when I first filled the jar. The jar was subjected to ambient indoor conditions year round--dry in winter, humid in summer.

By contrast, my homemade aromatics, which contain zero humectants, dry out as one would expect.

It's not that bad, is it?

I haven't met a MacBarren blend that wasn't' a fire breathing dragon. I smoked their navy flake for a while, but found better without the bite. If you can make it work, more power to ya -- some of their stuff would be delicious otherwise.

Well, I have to say my new favorite is the captain black gold. I first smoked this in 2008 and I enjoyed it very much. It burns clean and produces copious amounts of smoke with a medium sweet caramelized flavor. I smoked a bowl again back in early march in my church warden and I do believe that there has not been a day gone by since that I haven't enjoyed a pipe or two.

I ordered some tobacco online from a US company that even after exchange and shipping, was still much cheaper. That is until the PST tax is applied, That's where they get ya. Anyway, the packages are measured by the ounce, 1.5 ounce per pouch. I got the captain black gold, cherry, and dark, and peterson cherry cavendish. the canadian pouches are sold by the 50gm which is 6gm shy of 2 ounces. I managed to get a couple of gas station I go to to stock it for me, they're nice people.

I've taken to packing my pipe before I leave my beeyard at the end of the day and puffing on it for the 25 minute drive home. Saves my cigarettes. I have a way of holding my pipe with the window just down enough to vent that I don't burn out my bowl while not hot boxing the truck.

in the shop, after having a pipe of cbg, the room note is much like roasted marshmallows. I'm impressed that this is just a golden cavendish made from virginia tobacco. I would dearly love to know the casing recipe they use for this and the process. I've heard this baccy described as mild aromatic, all I know is that I am thoroughly enjoying a new favourite.

As a side note, the captain black royal is pretty good too.

Tell me about your experience with CB Royal. I tried it...Just seemed like there wasn't much flavor . The unlit smelled great but I was quickly disappointed by the almost non-existent flavor . I mixed some Royal with a pinch of CBCherry and the Regular Cav(white pouch) then added some Erik Nording Retriever (in the bean dip looking can)...the end result has a mild cherry ,mellow hazelnutty caramel, dessert type tobacco taste.
