Nasal Snuff

Been trying my first nasal snuff. Looking for a smokeless alternative, for when my cigs are not allowed.

My one and only snuff so far is Wilson's of Sharrow SP Best. Bergamont (orange) with a little of that urinal cake (Lakeland scent) that the English are so found of on their tobaccos. Nice, but not sure it's my style though.

Taking some practice to sniff correctly, you want it in the bottom of your nose, no sting that way. Will take a while (my first cigarettes did not come easy).

So far I like it enough that I ordered a dozen different flavors of Wilson's of Sharrow from https://mrsnuff.com/index.php. Hope to hone in a preferred style/flavor. Found a better deal after I ordered, buy ten flavors, get one free from http://www.toquesnuff.com/. All in all not expensive, shipping from the UK is reasonable.

It's not whole leaf... yet. Got to start somewhere. Already researching making snuff from scratch. Don't laugh, tried some of that fine shake that collects in the bottom of my Top-O-Matic... plain whole leaf does taste very promising!

I've been making/perfecting my own for a couple years. I'm working on making a slow rpm plate-grinding-mill to make it very fine. I flavor mine with tinctures, made from vodka and what ever flavor I want. (Orange, lavender, pine, mint etc) I grind mine up in a burr grinder for coffee beans. I let it soak in the desired tincture for a few days in cool temperatures (add enough to make a very moist putty like substance) then let it dry in the open air, and then re grind it to break up any large clumps. It's very rudimentary compared to real snuff mills but it works fantastic.

Snuff is addicting... the more often I do it, the more often I do it... the more I do, the more I do...

So far the only downside, the flavoring on mine makes my cigs taste off. Hope the more natural types will conflict less.

Need to get a mortar and pestal so I can compare the natural types with whole leaf. Research says some use sodium carbonate and some does not. A little salt is also added, makes sense, the body likes saline things.

Found a new sniffing method, the "box car" method. Has made the whole experience much better!

Wrap index finger around the end of thumb. Place a dose of snuff (use spoon, knife, key, pen cap...) on end of thumb nail. The index finger forms a "cup" around the thumb nail, keeps the snuf away just enough from the end of your nose, much easier not to over sniff and control. I can now take my time and use multible small sniffs. Works in the wind and much less mess/waste than the traditional pinch method. So much easier! I figure the "box car" name comes from the 4 index finger segments that wrap around the thumb.

Tried some more whole leaf, did too much at once, made my nose run. I think I need a finer grind.

I just placed an order with MisterSnuff last night. Samuel Gawith has the tap boxes that NatetheGreat mentioned. Their 10g portions normally sell for $1.99 US, though the selection of varieties in 10g boxes appears to be pretty limited right now. Gawith and Hogarth also sells this portion for the same amount. This is a relatively cheap way to try a number of different snuffs.

Something else that you might want to consider if you're looking to enjoy tobacco is Swedish Snus.

delux., That is a strange placement for a steak? Sam has a mint tast. what is that? I do like a spearmint. But a real good dipp is a hit. I have one in now as well as a turd on fire. We have got to go to The green on this as well as I? So PO GREEN. What do You say?

Been trying more. A couple American Scotches, smells and taste just like a mixture of plain Dark Air and Dark Fired. This should be easy to replicate or improve on with whole leaf. Tried a dozen small tins of English snuffs, most were disappointing, I think stale, hardly any flavor. Freshness seems key with flavored snuff. Even though I am not a menthol smoker, really liking spearmint and menthol.

Looked around at grinding methods. Best/cheapest so far is makeshift ball grinder a guy uses. Nothing more than a cosmetic jar and ball bearings that he shakes for a few minutes. I am thinking a heavy duty ceramic (shatter proof glass?) jar and some marbles. Will also need a sieve, sounds like 200- 400 micron works.

Back of the hand did not work for me, too hard to aim. Seems like most people use the pinch or box car method. After a week of practice, I have it down to where I rarely over sniff.

Yep, another form of a ball grinder. As kids we had very nice heavy duty rock tumblers, were cheap back then, not so much these days.

I've known them as Ball Mills, for pyrotechnic related uses. DON'T use glass marbles! They chip and wear down, most of the particles will be very small, yet still very sharp. Ground glass isn't very good for the body. Some of them advertize snuff, herbs, pollen grinders. If they'll grind pollen I would expect a pretty fine cut.

Been snuffing as often as I can, don't think I have used over $3.00 worth in a week. A pound would last all year. Get into return on investment. Leads me back to a plain old mortar and pestal and a sieve, labor is free.

From first hand experience, marbles wear away pretty quickly. I don't think I'd want to inhale anything that might have silica in it. If you do go with ceramic, run them for a few hours in whatever mill with water and then wash, rinse and dry. That will take off the loose pieces and sharp edges, after that, ceramic wears very slowly. Real bearing balls are not usually plated, neither is steel tumbling media.
