Mother's Day 2023

EverettA_FrancesE_1922_6973_MothersDay2023_300.jpg

On the wall of my living room is a framed photo of my mother, sitting in her daddy's lap. It was taken in 1922. She appears to be about 6 months old. It had been only a few short years since her father had returned from mustard-gassed trenches of France, fighting in the Great War (since renamed, after the next, even greater war). When my mother was about 7 years old, the world's economy collapsed. She emerged from the Great Depression into adulthood during the throes of World War 2.

To me, she was just Mommy, guiding me and my siblings through a happy, relatively care-free and abundant childhood. It is only by looking back—back before my time—that I can fully appreciate her triumph.

History never repeats itself, but it does have some well entrenched, bad habits. When I feel put upon by current events, sometimes an old photo helps bring me clarity of perspective.

National Greasy Fingers Day (National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day)

very basic:
Grill (fry) a cheese sandwich that is buttered on the outside.

I saw this on the morning news. By coincidence I was planning on making grilled cheese tonight, (as a break from the big pot of chili I've been working on) so I guess I'm right on time,

In the US, today is Memorial Day. It is nominally a day of remembrance of the soldiers and sailors and aviators who died in war. My weather today is chilly with intermittent drizzle.

Gloomy is an appropriate weather setting for a Memorial Day. I've been slowly reading a book on Canadian history (Rise to Greatness, by Conrad Black—1000 pages). It's actually a remarkably detailed history of all the perpetual political and military chaos of North America and Europe over the past 500+ years. There are even a few brief, widely scattered episodes of peace and hope.

We should remember that the vast majority of the military members who die in war (throughout all of the world's history) are teenagers and young adults, sent and led to war mostly by old adults.
