Thanks BB for the info. In this area and northern NY there is no known natural gas, coal or oil. I feel for you guys where it is a hazard. I have got to believe my well blowing up would spoil my day. You talk about dug wells. Are they common in your area? Here almost all wells are deep drilled in limestone or is some areas drive points. Drive points are now illeagl and cannot be replaced.

I was raised up drinking well water . Ours is from limestone and some sandstone . It is some of the best water you could drink . I hate the city water and I still can not drink it unless its made into instant tea .
Now in south eastern Ky it is sulfur water that my mother was raised on she liked the sulfur water and I can't stand it .I would say the type of water is what you get used to .

Not all well would have gas vapors in them it was very rare .

Yeah, ours is hard as nails too with lots of iron and some manganese. I get a kick out of the "bottled water" folks. When I go flying I take bottles for my own water with me cause it cheap. One guy bummed a bottle from me, took a drink and looked at the label. He said "Gee, this water never tasted so good." He didn't want to believe me when I told him what it was. LOL

They drilled a gas well where I was raised in PA. After they fractured it the closest house to the well could light the water as it came out of the sink facet. Needless to say the company that drilled the gas well also paid for a new water well for them.

A neighbor told me once when I described the well water at a house I was renting in lincoln Texas for A prolonged job that the water smelled so bad like sulpher was from natural gas and if you let it set the smell would go away. I couldn't even brush my teeth with it only shower. It was way back in the boonies an old red cedar cabin full of scorpions on 27 acres. But it was cheap.
