"PA Broadleaf" is a categorical term used in commercial trade. The actual tobacco varieties that may be traded under that category can be just about any of a number of different broadleaf and seedleaf varieties grown commercially in Pennsylvania, typically around Lancaster, PA.

Oscuro is a color classification of any cigar leaf, and indicates a very dark color, darker than "maduro". You might find the WLT Wiki (linked in the menu bar) section on cigars interesting.

I enjoyed my first Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapped cigar thoroughly last weekend. If I wanted to grow my own PA Broadleaf next year, what varieties would the forum recommend?

The specific varieties sold as PA Broadleaf are pretty well hidden. We do know that the vast majority of cigar tobacco grown in Pennsylvania comes from the Amish farmers around Lancaster, and that their primary crop is Lancaster Seedleaf. There is a pretty fuzzy line between Maryland varieties and the Pennsylvania broadleaf/seedleaf varieties.

Here are the possibilities:
  • Walkers Broad Leaf
  • Lancaster Seed Leaf
  • Glessnor
  • Swarr and Swarr-Hibshman
  • Wisconsin Seedleaf (901, etc.)
I have never grown Walkers Broadleaf, but I have grown all the others. I find Glessnor to be highly productive and reliable, in my location. Swarr-Hibshman is a close second. Both produce large, wide leaf that kilns to a rich maduro and even some oscuro.
