Good evening.

I recently ordered a few varieties from Victory Seeds to try next year and one is a Brazillian variety called Paulista, a wrapper type.

Anyone grow this one? Comments/experiences?

Victory Seed's own photos show a rather diminutive plant. Calling it a wrapper doesn't make it so.

The totality of information about Paulista that I can find anywhere else on the Internet is a single entry in the ARS-GRIN database: PI 260363 [Ti 1417]. The variety was identified merely as "Paulista", and was donated by the Agronomic Institute of Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1959. The GRIN data on the variety may suggest why you have never heard much about it:

It's a very short plant with relatively small leaves, a modest leaf count, and likely not suitable for use as a wrapper for other than for the smallest of cigars. In its favor for use as a wrapper is its square vein angle.

Jessica's photos from GRIN (2013) seem to show the same thing: https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/imagedisplay.aspx?lnk=355116, Whole plant (notice the leaf size in comparison to the blossom size.)

So, let us know how it turns out.

Wow, waist high? That's a little plant.

I guess worst case I'll be rolling me some cigarillos next year. Or maybe it will be an interesting component as a filler.

Thank you for finding that. In have yet to learn how to do successful searches on ARS-GRIN.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I've just created a page of step-by-step instructions for searching ARS-GRIN, and added it to the Index of Key Forum Threads.

It can also be a newer version (a cross) of the one that was donated to the GRIN in 1959, maybe you will have some interesting plants.
The only way to know is to grow some ;)

Victory Seeds carries the genuine heirloom seed production of New Hope Seeds, and seems to have a higher standard of varietal naming and strain purity than the average seed vendor. (I believe Northwood Seeds is the very best in this regard.) So I would be surprised if the Paulista was a newer hybrid.
