I posted a reference to this in another thread, but I thought it deserves it's own thread.

These are pictures of Cuban farmers harvesting tobacco. You'll see the leaf appears to be what I would consider to be immature. I believe harvesting the leaf at this age is the key to a mild cigar. I don't know what type of tobacco this is, but my guess is it's a wrapper.

Notice there is no yellow in the leaf. There is no alligatoring of the leaf surface either.

Very small almost immature looking plants. This could be due to poor soil conditions, but we've always known the best tobacco is grown in poor soil.

Good shot of leaf stage of maturity.

Please add your observations.

I saw them last year and still think they are good to have around. I now they helped me a lot last year when I was trying to decide when to harvest my leaf for cigarettes. In that case I just looked for them have more signs in every way than I see in these photos. As I remember it it sort of started a spark on HTGT about just how green you want a leaf to be for a cigar. In that debate someone actually posted pictures from all over showing how green and smooth cigar leaf is when it is picked.

It all depends on what you're using the leaf for. Cigarette tobacco is more ripe than cigar wrapper when harvested. Cigar filler is more ripe than wrapper. Commercial tobacco is ripe ripe to maximize yield per acre.

I just got some cigar wrapper in and the leaves are only 18" long and 8" wide....which is a very small leaf.
