This thread was ripped, screaming, from its mother's arms. Somehow I managed to hijack my own pipe blending thread. So I've moved the discussion of which location has the most pipe smokers to this new thread.

Like I imagine a turn of the century tobacconist shop would have smelled
Ah, yes. The aromas of tobacconists in 2000. (Seriously, around 2000 or so, I purchased a large bag of Latakia from a tobacconist in Blacksburg--directly across the street from the Virginia Tech campus, who said he didn't know what to do with it! The guy also didn't have a buffing wheel for his customers' pipe bits. "Nobody smokes a pipe any more." I was able to purchase my last tins of genuine Rattray's blends, that were actually made in Perth.)

Apparently Oregon is the pipe smoking capital of the US. Almost twice as many smokers as in Virginia.

The table covering prevalence of current use doesn't even have a value for pipe smokers in Virginia. Nobody asked me.

The survey question asked if someone had ever used a particular tobacco product at least once during their lifetime. I would look at the second table, which shows current use.

Is it meaningful that, say a 71 year old tasted a flake from a twist of tobacco when he was 11 (and possibly puked afterwards), and lived then in a different state than at the date of the survey? I consider the entire study poorly designed (i.e. I would have rejected it for publication). The results are curious, but not all that significant.

This forum membership would make an interesting population in which to study actual tobacco preferences, if they were responsive to surveys. But I've found that no more than about a dozen will participate in any survey or poll that I've posted over the years.

Yeah, this is nonsensical study, for the reasons Bob listed and many others. There are not twice as many regular pipe smokers in Oregon as in Virginia: population OR ~3.8 million, VA 8+ million.

Agree on the first premise, disagree on the second. We should do another survey, making sure it's forum wide, and see what the over/under is on a dozen. Would be an interesting experiment. I think the whole forum is more responsive these days, but maybe I'm wrong.

There are more pipe smokers per capita in Edmonton than any other city in Canada. Anecdotal evidence comes from the fact that the store I have been going to for 26 years sells significantly more pipes than any other.

I could relate anecdotal or even factual evidence that there are many more pipe shops selling more pipes per shop in Ohio than those in Virginia and augment the argument with the relative states' population but my conjecture would remain: even if an independent accurate accounting of the tobacconists' sales were done, it still wouldn't quantify the pipe smokers in each state.

The study cited would likewise remain unfocused.

I think we agree? :)

We should do another survey, making sure it's forum wide
What does that mean? Any member can view all new posts--if they choose to. Over the existence of this forum, I have surveyed on numerous subjects. One use preference survey was announced in the Announcements, and was actually hosted on Survey Monkey. The number of respondents to surveys of any kind on this forum have never been of statistical significance. Even with pipe blend contests, for example, we get voting from only a fraction of the forum's pipe smokers.

If we just want to elect the Prom Queen, that's not a problem. But if the goal is to project poll results to a more generalized population, it's not worth the effort.

BUT... any member is at liberty to ask questions or set up a poll.

Exactly what I said. The only surveys I've seen have been to do with pipe blend contests. Not a bad thing, but it's limited, no?
There was a survey where the choices were
cigar/cigarette/pipe/smokeless. All I remember is that cigar was way more than pipe.

As for store info, in Canada most of the pipes and pipe tobacco are imported and distributed by one company, so actual data on which city buys the most pipes and pipe tobacco is more discernable.

Besides myself I have only seen 4 other people smoking a pipe in the wild. Our neighbor in the apartment that I grow up in. He was an RAF veteran and found out a few years ago a Reverend also. Even as a boy I enjoyed the smell of him smoking his pipe. A Greek Orthodox Priest. His choice smoke was Captain Black Gold. Lastly two men walking down the street in the financial district.
