I use tomato cages for all my tomato plants They work great to prevent blow down and support. What used to be sold as indian wire. you can buy rolls from 4' - 6' tall and cut for any diameter size you want. You could wrap with your pref. for covering 1-...plants. Also being put up in my area for hog control, very durable and galvanized.
I'll post pic. when it quits raining.

Sure, covering several individual plants for shading is an idea to consider. I had looked at some home-made hoop house designs in the past. They are covered with either a single or double layers of 6 mil UV protected plastic. The one I liked the most enclosed about 2400 Sq Ft. That is too ambitious for me. Just to erect a decent sized enclosure designed to keep hornworms at bay will be a big job this year. My work load has begun to pick up again so anything I do erect is going to be more modest and could be smallish. Perhaps several smaller ones would be best for this season.

i understand this is mostly to keep hornworms away, and get hole free leaves, but can i assume you can grow baccy in the shade? (certain types?). i have a 20 or 30 foot long x 4 foot wide strip between me and the neighbor. it barely gets any sun just a little in the morning, and some indirect reflecting off the neighbors house. also quite a bit of short pine needle ends up there. i know pine needle keeps things from growing, but i believe it is because its too acidic,(which is good for baccy right?). thistle weeds grow there no problem.

I grow CT Shade and it requires about 40% shade from direct sunlight. It sounds to me like your patch might be too shady. That said it does sound sheltered and that's good. Why not give a few plants a try? Like chicken soup -- What could it hurt?
