nicotine aside, from reading some things from the tobacco archives, red russian was used specifically in tests dealing with resistances. this was the control plant that was susceptible to nearly everything they threw at it. memory is getting a little fuzzy about that article now but i remember it basically had none.

any plant that is renowned for how easily it succumbs to just about anything is not something i want to spend a season on, maybe you guys have more seasons in you than I do, if so and you want to grow this just keep in mind that it might need to be babied moreso than normal tobacco plants.

It is an old version, so I've almost figured that it is sensitive to most. -I read somewhere that its red flowers will look exactly like Havannor did before, Is it true?

Everybody had read something on somewhere but nobody knows where. Are there anybody growing it or grew it before, any photos, any observations or any papers (old or new) ?

I got some Red Russian seed from Skychaser last week, I got them started last night. This will be my first time growing it but he may have some information having grown before. I'll let you know how it comes along.

Thanks Daniel. I hope you have nice results and share them with us.

BTW, when it comes the susceptibility (if it really is) of Red Russian , there're a lot of varieties -even new varieties- susceptible to various diseases. For example Little Crittenden is susceptible to Black Shank, Black Root Rot, TMV and Wildfire but I never saw any home growers refused to grow this variety because of its susceptibility to these diseases. There're some diseases that none of the tobacco varieties can withstand, this is why people are using chemicals. So, for a homegrower disease resistance is not a very important point.

I've grown it twice and never had it get over 3' in height. I have noticed it seems to be susceptible to sun scald, but never had any other problems growing it.

I've developed a scientific system for testing nicotine content. Smoke a cigarette. When finished, if you feel like lighting up another, it's low in nicotine. If you don't, it's just right. If you feel a little queasy or dizzy it's very high in nicotine. If you feel like taking a dump, it's high.

Ah... the failings of Academia! What is low for you might be high for others. You and I might smoke the exact same cigarette, you might get nothing out of it and I might be vomiting in the corner.

Remind me to smoke outside with you two heathens. drool[1].gif

Oh, please, do not forget to inform us, because I also have some seeds and do not know to plant or not?

I just transplanted some into individual cells. They're doing very well, nice deep roots compared to the other varieties. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the weather takes a turn for the better.
