Hello Guys, my second attempt to grow virginia gold, near desaster. 72 seeds in a peat pellet. (cover)
After 1 week, 20 of them started to gro, now 3 Week later, only 22.
What sould I do, keep the cover on, and continue watering at the bottom.
Or simply leave them in open seed starter.
Tanks

Your plants look leggy, like searching for light. They need more light. Do you have more seed? It wouldn't hurt to add seed in the empty cells, I would be getting nervous after three weeks. What are the temps where the plants are?

I would like to know how you experience peat plugs. I won't be using them again. I think they don't hold water properly, and then either dry out too fast or keep too much moisture, causing the new hypocotyl to die off.

I've tried both unfertilized and fertilised plugs with the same results. For the next planting, I'm going to use seedling mix in normal trays. I like the idea of the plugs, but so far, I have not been impressed with them.

If your peat based plugs and compost is the same as ours here then its utter rubbish. We've long had this no peat save the planet peat alternatives and I think it's mostly made from tree bark and ground up carpets. Theres no goodness in it and it doesnt retain moisture. I just use a good fine seed compost.

I never had any luck with the peat plugs. The ones I tried always sucked up way too much moisture. Mine had some kind of burlap material around the plug so maybe the fabric was the problem, but I quit using them pretty quickly. I use Miracle Grow Seed Starting Potting Mix and have had great results with the soil wicking up the right amount of moisture. I overseed direct to soil and then weed out the excess to one per cell. Mine look like Chia pets until time to thin them down.

I initially thought that these peat plugs were the next best thing, but I will also stick to normal seedling mix going forward. I will try them on chillies and tomatoes, but not with anything else.

I'm planting Burley and Connecticut broadleaf this weekend.

Please share an update. By now, all of mine would have died off in the plugs.

I will not use peat most pallet, anymore, BUT for now
i have save 18 plant out of 72.
I did transfer them to 3 inch pot a month ago, now , today they out and I a slowly transfering them into the ground.
I will be late a little bit iThink for harvest.
When transplant, i put by hand a water soluble fertlizer transplanter (10/52/10) directly on the thousand root of the plant. ( not diluted).
Anything i can do to accelerate the process ?

They are putting their energy to growing the roots now. All the action is below ground. Then they start shooting up in a couple weeks and send the energy to the leaf. Don't overfertilize. Patience is a virtue right after transplant.

I think it's too late this season. I grew Virginia last year, started the seeds in potting mix and transplanted the seedlings into flower beds and bags with composted soil. They did grow huge. Pictures from the last year.

Mine did the same thing (possibly because I put them outside too early).
The stem will elongate, and they will get taller. Mine finished around 5’ tall.

Ho, so it will still grow, good news !!
Did you cut the flowers so they can grow faster ?
Was the tobacco good ? Not sur where to cut that flower, plus some are just beginning to make flower, not very clear where to cut.

I topped them (cut the flowers off).
This made the leaves grow much larger,
and probably increased the nicotine.
Was the tobacco good?
No idea- it’s still drying.
Vielen Dank :) , thanks, it give me hope.
For the growned flower, easy, but for the other one, the one who are beginning to flower, not that clear where to cut
