I was just thinking the other day about how many of us depend on a healthy dose of vitamin N to get us and/or keep us our joyous selves, and if, for whatever reason, we found ourselves unable to acquire it from any outside source(s), what is a sustainable form or method of delivery for nicotine? I can truly only think of one method that doesn't involve relying on anything out than a sharp knife or blade of some sort and a form of fire...cigars.
It might be a profound thought, but think about it. Smokeless tobacco requires the addition of additives such as salt or sodium carbonate. Let's not get into the complexities of vaping. Cigarettes require some form of paper. In essence, a cigar is just a cigarette with a natural (tobacco leaf) wrapper and the stuffing isn't shredded. It does not require any outside additions, just the same basic methods of growing, harvesting, curing, and aging/storing!
Just food for thought!

If you have a hardwood fire, and leach the ashes, you can make your own carbonate.
I wonder if a boiled leaf/stem paste could take the place of the glues?
Cigarillos are my next year’s challenge.
They seem to be the most basic form tobacco can take.

You can make a perfectly workable pipe using a penknife, and a stem made from an ash tree branch. [The use of paper for manufacturing cigarettes is merely an expedient adopted because of its easier manipulation by a cigarette rolling machine.] If you wrap a 64 ring-size (1") cigar in paper, then it is legally defined as a cigarette. The addition of flavorants to tobacco is mostly derived from the need for commercial manufacturers to distinguish their product from that of their competitors. And, as noted above, the addition of chemical alkali simply makes a smaller bit of tobacco provide a more rapid absorption of alkaloids.

Hold the stem downward, then forcefully blow it out. You can also force a bit of water (or vodka) through the stem. Folks have been smoking pipes for well over 1000 years.

As long as there isn't a worldwide confiscation of pipes, there are enough already around to keep everyone happy... and as has been stated, they're fairly easily made if you find yourself without one. They don't actually require anything other than a bit of fire to use, much like cigars don't actually require a fancy cutter or a humidor.

I think the bottom line of this "sustainable" issue is that all forms of tobacco use—cigars, pipes, smokeless and even cigarettes—have been used for centuries without adding stuff to the tobacco. And you can, if you wish, alkalinize smokeless using wood ash. Cigarettes can be easily made using any paper (twisting the ends), or by using well dried corn husk. My long-running thread on pure tobacco pipe blends is filled exclusively with pipe blends to which nothing but tobacco is added. Pipe tools can easily be improvised with whittled sticks and abandoned pieces of solid wire. I am currently still using a simple pipe tamper that I whittled from a twig of dried Live Oak 6 years ago.

[For years, I would wander through home improvement stores, looking at everything on every shelf, wondering, "what else can this be used for?"] I've made many a pipe shank and stem from sections of bamboo "tomato stakes". Cobs for making pipes are easy to grow. Most tight-grained woods can be used to whittle a durable pipe bowl. I've even made a pipe bowl out of a dried corn stalk.

The toughest part of this apocalyptic scenario is growing your own tobacco, curing it properly, and being patient enough for it to age adequately.

I’ve been eyeing a couple of my cut-down tobacco stalks, wondering how long one would last as a pipe bowl. Probably not long, I’m sure.

Once it is fully dried and bored, you would need to place a wooden plug into the bottom, then line the entire bowl with a 50:50 mixture of fine sand and plaster of Paris (used in knife-making forges). Personally, I would try making a pipe out of a ripe avocado, before spending the time using a tobacco stalk.

EDIT: If you are successful, definitely post photos on the forum.

Doubt that I’ll try it, honestly. I think it would be more like a taco salad in a tortilla bowl. Consumable. I’ll stick to cobs for the more “all natural” style.

Way too complicated for a stogie. And he indeed uses glue.
