Ain't that the truth?? I quit visiting all of them, especially Reddit. Good lord, how some people can get wrapped around the axle over the stupidest things. There are a grant total of three online forums I visit regularly, and two of them are aviation related.
This B & M owner and member of a forum has decided to stop advertising his restocking of Esoterica and other Limited Editions or just rare stuff like Samuel Gawith, Rattrays, etc. because customers were monopolizing the phone and throwing tantrums because they couldn't get some. We're talking supposedly grown ups, here. :ROFLMAO:

It sounds like you may have developed a sensitivity or allergy to propylene glycol. Easy enough to test, not so easy to remove from your tinned tobacco.
I got allergic to vegetable glycerine when I vaped but pure propylene glycol was ok.
I got some kind of itching in the hair but nothing visible, it was annoying but when I used only propylene glycol everything was fine.
I really wonder why ingredients don't have to be labeled on the tobacco.

Not to mention the economical benefits...
Agreed though. i came at pipe smoking and Whole leaf from the other end.
I started making my own snus, got off the cigarettes, and got thinking "this whole leaf tobacco is great. Sure would like to try some in a pipe."
Got a pipe, and it was fantastic.
Started looking at pipe reddits and other threads, and they're super consumer driven
"i'm looking for X... Oh, try this blend and that blend, and this pipe, and that pipe..."
"X Blend just released... I Cellared 17 pounds for a rainy day, and willed it to my great grandniece"
"X Company is sold to a large company... Oh No! I took out a second mortgage to cellar 3 tons of my favorite blend so I can smoke it til the day I die"
Wondered if I was missing out, so i got a few blends.
Tried them a few times, but the Whole Leaf is just SO much better.
Enjoyed the Golden Sliced, but I'd rather smoke the VA Ripe.
Enjoyed Five Brothers, but I'd rather smoke unadulterated Burley.
I'm not buying any more blends.
The ones I've mentioned might get finished over a long time, but 29 times out of 30*, i'm reaching for my Whole Leaf.
*Mostly made up and arbitrary numbers used to imply the VAST majority of times
When I joined FTT 3 years ago, I was exclusively obsessed with everything cigars and looked past all of the piper postings on here chalking it up to the senior citizen's area of the website. Haha. Now I have over 20 jars of shredded varieties 2 noodle presses and 3 pipes. Every other day I am going about my business in the house and stop myself just to open up 1 of the jars and take in the aroma and go about my business. I am still very much involved with everything cigar but the pipe fills that hole when I don't have an hour and a half to smoke.

Funny you should say that... I had a pipe yesterday that lasted a bit over an hour. That's not unusual. I do, however, often leave a pipe for a while and come back to it later. Unlike my experiences with other forms of smoking, the bowl of pipe tobacco doesn't seem to suffer from sitting for an hour or even a day at a time.

Pipe smoking seems to be (like clothing fashions) a generational thing. My father smoked a pipe during the mid 1940s, before I was born. By the time I smoked a pipe, in the early 1970s, only grandpas and hip university students smoked pipes. Smoking a pipe is truly troublesome while driving, and any other activity that occupies your hands. And when a pipe is done, you still have a pipe to carry around.

I find that I smoke my pipes almost exclusively when confined to my study during crappy weather. And likewise, I smoke cigars almost exclusively when I can sit out on my front porch to stretch my eyeballs.

When out and about a small corn cob pipe is handy, very light in the pocket and cheap enough to forget somewhere without troubles!

I've smoked my pipe on longer trips... and even in town a few times. It is a little inconvenient when it goes out, but not an insurmountable problem. The bigger issue for me is that, when not being smoked, it does tent to get ash in places that I'd rather not have it. Like inside my car or truck. I've seen pipe holders that can be mounted in the vehicle, but none so far have had any positive retention that would keep the pipe from flying out when cornering or during a hard stop. So, I will smoke when on the highway, but I keep looking for a good solution to the pipe rest question.

When traveling it's an inconvenience to have to carry enough tobacco for the trip. Not a big inconvenience, of course -- there are Ziploc bags for shorter trips and jars for longer ones, and a tobacco pouch for use during the day. It would be nice to know that one could find a decent tobacconist with a good supply of pipe tobacco or pipe cleaners wherever one goes, but those days are long gone. A pipe smoker needs to travel entirely self sufficient these days. When my darling wife has a break in her busy quilting schedule, I'm going to see if she can't whip me up a suitable pipe roll or bag to carry my "stuff".

I smoke while driving all the time. It helps with my patience. Relights with forearms on the wheel when driving straight or at a light or while clenching. I usually tamp with my pinkie. Ash gets dumped on the floor mat. I will normally have several half smoked bowls available. plenty of places to put the pipe down if needed. Windows slightly cracked. I don’t think I need a magnet.

Maybe a Falcon pipe can be used together with a magnet, it has a metal stem.
Aluminum, though, I believe.

I do relights typically steering with a knee. My sunroof pops open at the back which draws the smoke out nicely. When I was smoking aromatics it wasn't quite as big a deal... everybody loves the smell of 1-Q. Still vented it though. I very rarely drive more than short trips around town, so it's just not an issue but a couple times a year. This year I'll have our annual fishing trip with my wife's family and a trip to Oshkosh for Airventure. Each trip will be roughly 10 hours each way, so I'll figure something out before the end of May. I've got cup holders galore, so I'm thinking a pipe holder with a spot for the lighter and tamper that will fit into one. Like a cell phone holder, but for something I actually want to have along.

A pipe neck holder similar to bob dylans harmonica neck holder would be good for driving.
For long trips one can have several pipes in the neck holder.
I think I just invented something good!:p

Casing, massive doses of humectants. I suspect they started when Laudisi purchased them. Never had any problems when Tarler was at the helm. My intolerance progressively built up once Laudisi was at the helm.
Well, then, look at Peterson pipes, since 2018...it says it all.
I wonder if the practice of casing their tobaccos has more to do with the company’s recurring mold problems. As for Peterson pipes, the quality seems to be coming back up, thanks to harping from activist Petegeeks.

Thanks for sharing. I've still got to establish my stock and bearings on cigars, but looking forward to eventually getting and processing whole leaf for the pipe. Question: I wonder if the Cornell & Diehl blending tobaccos are cased at all, do you know? Like this one for example: https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipe-tobacco/cornell-diehl/bright-virginia-ribbon/product_id/114409
Oddly enough, I fell into this thread looking for guidance on DIY casing/topping. I have found folks here talking about levels of case, putting rope tobaccos in water/olive oil alongside flavoring, and more, but solid process info is eluding me.

I want to make my Gawith Hoggarth Dark Birdseye taste like Condor. I also want to recreate the Kendal Dark Vanilla and Coconut Twist they used to export to the US (their current management seem to have forgot they ever made Kendal Dark Vanilla).

I do enjoy unflavored tobacco, and want to start making my own blends from whole leaf, but I still need to assemble some know-how and equipment. Commercial tobacco will continue to burn in pipes as long as it’s available, though. I’m unlikely to replicate some of the blends I enjoy.
