This is what happened to some stuff from another supplier. Been jarred since august. I can’t afford for shit like this to happen here in NZ. I accept it may have just been a bad batch, my fault, or just an accident, but non of my WLT leaf has any issues despite getting the same treatment.

Most likely. Storing too dry is always easy to remedy, when you are about to use it. I've molded my share of tobacco over the years.

EDIT: I should add that if commercial pipe tobacco is your experience with how it should be stored, that propylene glycol squishiness will lead you down the path to the Dark Side.

Yeah I just find it strange that out of the 20kg of whole leaf jarred up only one was like this. Oh well that’s how it goes. This bag was lost in transit for a few months and turned up with lots of green spots after heat treatment anyways.

And yes good call about case of commercial pipe blends being too high for whole leaf storage.

is this jar a goner? Or is there any processing tips for it?Thinking boiling?

Yep everything has been given the once over for checking. All other leaf is good. I was in the process of transferring to Mylar and vacuum sealing leaf when I discovered the jar. I think there also was an issue with the gasket seal on that particular lid as well

What a shame. I accidentally molded about a half lb of samsun recently by keeping it in too moist of case.

That being said, this is the only tobacco I buy NOT from WLT, and all my other bags were at a very similar moisture content (which I have since dried down, learned my lesson on that one obviously.) It was the only bag that grew any mold. It was my understanding, like Bob said, that the development of mold is largely dependent on moisture content. I assume this is simply a very pro-WLT coincidence?? Hah!

As Bob said, mold is everywhere but only grows where there is enough humidity.

But I think the quality of the tobacco has an influence on mold too, let me explain :
When the tobacco leaves are homogeneous (same maturity, same cured state, not too many damages/holes, etc), at a stable RH, they are at same case, they feel the same under your fingers.
But when your tobacco leaves are not homogenous (some green/brown spots, different colors or thickness) then if you store them at the same RH, the leaves will not all be at the same case, and some leaves might be humid enough to allow mold to begin to grow.

Of course, if you store it very dry you won't have mold, but if you store them at low case, to allow them to age correctly, then there is a risk.

With my home grown, I had more issues with mold with non homogeneous tobacco than with "good" leaves.

SO, at what point am I fed up with mold to start applying PG? From experience, what I have left of my homegrown, I stored dried, shredded, leaf (some home streamed cavendish) in mason jars on a very dry day, and has stayed very dry. But, it is a different smoke with different flavor (and not as much), and makes a very fast burn that burns to a fine powder. Is commercial “more” enjoyable? I think so. Seattle Pipe Club tins are going empty while homegrown is still in jars. Is there a way to top, without PG? I’d like to know .

I don’t think you could flavor without pg, because it has to have a liquid base and if that base is water you would have something to prevent mold. Although i could be wrong as I am no scientist.

Listening older episodes of “Pipes Magazine Radio Show” when he talked to Mike McNiel of McClelland, they discuss Lane’s casing and how they figured it out on their own at Missouri State Universities science center.

I recently bought a can of Rattray’s Black Virginia, and I can’t get it to dry out. The PG makes that blend an absolute nightmare to smoke. There are pros and cons to everything.
