I always like trying to do things from the ground up myself so when i thought about my cigar box and its contents i thought to myself "i bet i could make some of those"... After some researching and throwing a lot of caution to the wind here we are. I should probably have waited for next years summer to grow on the balcony but hey im nothing if not impatient. So after some researching with the help of ai and finding this forum and the lovely book by robert ca goff i started growing 2 varieties around a month ago and 2 varieties a few weeks later.
Right now the larger seedlings (burley 9 and criollo 98) are under around 250ppfd of light while the smaller sprouts (small stalk black mammoth and Connecticut shade) are under around 100ppfd. All are housed in a 70/30 coco coir to perlite mix except one thaats gonna be an experiment in an 2.2l dutch bucket on the windowsill, that one is growing much better than the others at the moment. The larger sprouts in coco are a bit pale, which im guessing is to do with nitrogen deficiency (probably why they are growing slower), I have increased their nutrients a bit and im waiting for new leaves to come in to see if they darken up a bit.
The light fixtures ive built myself out of strips of lm301 leds, some aluminium extrusion and led drivers.
As the idea is to roll my own cigars later im also gonna have to figure out a small kiln of some type, probably with a few reptile mats, some expanded foam from the hardware store and heat/humidity control but ill get to that in time.
Its gonna be an interesting grow ill document whatever issues or successes i come across here.
