I always like trying to do things from the ground up myself so when i thought about my cigar box and its contents i thought to myself "i bet i could make some of those"... After some researching and throwing a lot of caution to the wind here we are. I should probably have waited for next years summer to grow on the balcony but hey im nothing if not impatient. So after some researching with the help of ai and finding this forum and the lovely book by robert ca goff i started growing 2 varieties around a month ago and 2 varieties a few weeks later.
Right now the larger seedlings (burley 9 and criollo 98) are under around 250ppfd of light while the smaller sprouts (small stalk black mammoth and Connecticut shade) are under around 100ppfd. All are housed in a 70/30 coco coir to perlite mix except one thaats gonna be an experiment in an 2.2l dutch bucket on the windowsill, that one is growing much better than the others at the moment. The larger sprouts in coco are a bit pale, which im guessing is to do with nitrogen deficiency (probably why they are growing slower), I have increased their nutrients a bit and im waiting for new leaves to come in to see if they darken up a bit.

The light fixtures ive built myself out of strips of lm301 leds, some aluminium extrusion and led drivers.

As the idea is to roll my own cigars later im also gonna have to figure out a small kiln of some type, probably with a few reptile mats, some expanded foam from the hardware store and heat/humidity control but ill get to that in time.

Its gonna be an interesting grow ill document whatever issues or successes i come across here.

Nitrogen isn't the only nutrient that plants need to be green. There's also magnesium, calcium, and sulfur. Magnesium is an important component in chlorophyll. Also, check the pH of the water you water with. Most plants absorb most nutrients best if the water is about 5.5 to 6.5 pH.
Make sure the reptile mat you get actually heats up to 125f. My seedling mat doesn't get that hot.

True, coco is also quite vulnerable to ph swings and cal/mg deficiencies as well if i read correctly. Hopefully the added nutrients takes care of any such issues as well. I use a mineral nutrient called terra aquatica grow (ghe maxigro in the us) and i add some cal mg solution as well. I try to keep the ph of the water at about 6.

I guess theres no way of knowing how hot it will get except for insulating it and trying. Ill make sure to get one without a temperature controller built in though. I saw that those usually only went up to something like 100f

Years ago I bought a heat cable made for heating lizard terrariums. I used it for growing mushrooms. I tested the cable in a 2sqft cardboard box and it heated the box up to 154F before I stopped the experiment. So you'll need a thermostat. The cable is also waterproof; so it'll be safe in a kiln. its much like this one: https://www.kwikpets.com/products/zoo-med-repti-heat-cable-14-75ft-25w-1
That one I linked to is available in 50w version but I'm not sure if its waterproof. I have no idea what wattage mine is, nor the name brand, or where I got it. just too many years ago.

I grow cactus plants indoors and also use a cal/mag solution in addition to the usual miraclegro. It really makes a difference. My plants are way greener than they used to be. When using coco coir, it is best to treat it like a sterile, hydroponic substrate but be sure to rinse it real good before using it. Sometimes, its really high in salt.

Another soil amendment I recommend is Planters II. Its rock dust that is rich in trace minerals. here's a couple links:

A bit of an update things straightened out a bit after i increased the nutrients and things got back to being a darker green.

The tent (120x90cm) arrived and i got en quick and dirty version of the lights fixed. Much much stronger than i anticipated on max blast. so im probably gonna run em turned down a bit. My light meter told me that the center produced around 710ppfd at a meters distance.

I still need to fix some cable management and get an humidifier/ temperature controller fixed. In the process of building one but everything seems to be taking a lot of time as per usual.

not really mostly to keep the leds cool, distribute heat/moisture around the grow are and to give the plants some air currents to they grow stronger stems. Its a clip on one that a growshop sold.
Ill also have a computer fan or something running on extraction duty to keep the heat down if/when i decide to run the leds at max power. The temperature seems to stabilize are around 32c in the tent with only passive airflow.

The snail fan can be used as a blower fan. Place the blower at the bottom of the chamber and an opening with a damper for excess air to escape at the top on the opposite side. A 1-2 inch water tap can be used as an outlet damper. This snail fan supplies air to the chamber.

Thanks sergey thats an interesting way of doing an extraction fan. Could very well by appropriate for my build as well.

an update again then. A few of the plants are now in the final pots with a mix of vermicast 3-5%, biochar 3-5%, perlite 10% and the rest coco coir in 20l pots. got the fan in but i couldnt really find room to suspend it somewhere so its temporarily on a upside down pot. I think im gonna go the pc fan route and just hang em from the poles at different places. Light is now set at 350ppfd and ill increase it slowly during the coming weeks.

I also picked up a cheap second hand xiaomi branded humidifier to try and keep the tent at around 60% rh

The Criollo98 in straight up hydro is growing much much quicker than their counterparts. I wonder if thats just the hydro or that the others got a bit stunted from nutrient deficiency earlier.

Is that chard I see? yum.

I bought one of these to control temperature and humidity in my kiln. You might be able to use it in your grow space.
Don't know why that says robot or human but... I didn't buy it from walmart. I don't remember who I bought it from but its very affordable.
Strangely, I went to Elitech's website and couldn't find it. I fear it may already be out of production.

i might get one of those or i might build my own we shall see. Thanks for the recommendation.
Yeah im growing some herbs and sallads in the windowsill. They are all connected by a pump and a drain tube so they are acting basically like mini dutch buckets.
