Since cigar wrapper is grown in the shade, can one conclude that they would grow better in shady areas than other tobaccos? I have an area where light is only about 5 hours a day, and it would be nice to plant something there. The grass does well.

Shade-grown wrapper is grown under 40% shade-cloth (60% transmission), with full day exposure to the sun. Most "shady" areas are near trees, the roots of which will stunt the growth of the tobacco. If an area is shaded by a structure (house, wall, etc.), but the structure is white, which amplifies the sun that the plants do get, then it might work.

All of my wrapper is sun-grown.

I tried that with 15 different wrapper varieties my first year. I got 2' tall plants that didn't even make enough seed worth bagging. I would highly recommend the shade cloth in full sun.

The spot I'm thinking of doesn't sound too promising. Might as well try it, though. It's not really wrapper I'm after ; more, some use for the 25'x8' section between my house and the neighbour's driveway.

One of my patches is similar. Full sun from about noon till evening. Va Gold grew well there, but not enough hours sun to ripen properly so did not cure well. White stem Burley's did well there last year, Gold Burley and Harrow Velvet.14210186650190.jpg

That tobacco looks pretty good, considering the lack of sun.

Don't get me wrong, conditions are surely not optimal. The same plants in my big patch did much better. But with good variety selection, acceptable results can be obtained in just about any growing condition.

Make good use of your space available.

I suspect, based on limited experience, you will get good results putting any early maturing variety in that bed, and allowing it the full growing season.
