i'll try to remember to take pics of any lines with open capsules I see out in the field this year (I have made notes in the past). I have a theory that the "seedleaf" named varieties got their name from seeds falling out of open (dehiscent) capsules onto the leaves, but its just a theory.
one of our grad students was working on a project looking at the resultant progeny of a synthetic tobacco (man made cross of theoretical progenitor species) cross with k326. its a really marvelous population that's segregating for practically every trait imaginable, including the ability to self pollinate in the absence of pollinators (stigma and anther placement; none of our synthetic tobacco accessions set seed without manual pollinating), dehiscent capsules, leaf number and internode length, height, days to flower, leaf shape, petioles (generally of the "winged"/petioloid variety), flower color and shape...
