I've been out in the field breaking down suckers and turned patches of the sandy soil brown with seed.
The only times I've seen that, I've discovered budworm holes in some of the pods, with seed already spilled onto the upper leaves. I agree that the more primitive varieties that I've grown may crack a bit, but not (it seems) to keep it going year after year.

i'll try to remember to take pics of any lines with open capsules I see out in the field this year (I have made notes in the past). I have a theory that the "seedleaf" named varieties got their name from seeds falling out of open (dehiscent) capsules onto the leaves, but its just a theory.

one of our grad students was working on a project looking at the resultant progeny of a synthetic tobacco (man made cross of theoretical progenitor species) cross with k326. its a really marvelous population that's segregating for practically every trait imaginable, including the ability to self pollinate in the absence of pollinators (stigma and anther placement; none of our synthetic tobacco accessions set seed without manual pollinating), dehiscent capsules, leaf number and internode length, height, days to flower, leaf shape, petioles (generally of the "winged"/petioloid variety), flower color and shape...

I think you have a point here.

Last year I grew 25 strains. In the end of the season I collect, I believe from all strains, bud heads and store them in the ziplock. At every strain I make a note how open was bud head.

Wisconsin seedleaf was the only strain that I wrote "completely opened".
I made five categories.

closed, almost closed, partially open, open and completely opened.

For example Harrow Velvet, Little Crittenden, Pennsylvania red, and Black Mammoth were closed.

I'v got to start My new seed vault that way. I can see what the diff. can be to a point in the seed harvest. I found no diff. in the Izmir at any stage of the open pods as far as % of germination.

I don't really have anything new to add, but my coworker just sent me a pic of me transplanting into the float trays last month so I thought I would post it here for you guys to see. I know it's my first picture of myself on here and you're going to say "holy crap! she's just a kid!", but I am in fact 30 years old. Also, that made me the oldest person out there transplanting that day lol.

Yep. It's the kids that earn all the PhDs. Einstein, Lawrence and Oppenheimer had Nobel Prizes before they were 30. Get hopping.

I'm not much older and my wife is younger. Your not the only young one here. I actually pictured you as a 45yo pluss women stuck at a desk most of the day. I love the fact your a young spiritedly lass. My best years so far were in pot plant wholesale at the same age. I loved the diversity of species and the challenges of propagation. I mostly worked in laminar flow hoods but owned the nursery it also supplied. I have hAd a big change of circumstance so only keep a very small greenhouse off premesis and grow my baccy now. Are you a smoker? Or are you here for the love of the plant.

i would love to get involved in the seed request thing but as an out of towner I'm not eligible, I love what you guys stand for and the work you do. Keep it up.

Hey Dean, I presume you meant "potted plant" not "pot plant wholesaler." Or maybe you have an interesting story to tell. ;)

So I went out to the float house at the research station in Clayton today and it looks pretty good out there:

However, not everything responds so well to the float tray system. There are a couple accession that have gotten way out of control.

The guys at the station will not longer attempt to mow this tray so I had to cut it back with scissors.

Oddly enough, I thought these 4 troublemakers on the left-hand side were going to be orientals when I looked them up, but not so much (240 being the farthest to the left):
