I will grow it out, see the flower color, etc. I do believe there is something different about the Thuoc Lao tobacco after watching many videos of people in Vietnam getting obvious and powerful nicotine rushes which I would doubt comes from just a Virginia, Burley, etc. I think the question about varying levels of MAOIs is valid, but the information seems to be limited. We will find the truth one way or another!

Very interested in how this turns out. Also that African Dogon you're growing.

Response from khaibong in Vietnam about the flower color:

"they have white and pink flowers" (originally posted in his grow blog)

Sounds like a tabacum to me!

They have germinated! I will be interested in seeing what they yield. I agree, very dubious supplier but they claim they are imported directly from vietnam!

Khaibong sent me a PM that had the overview on how Thuoc Lao is processed, but all the Korean translators I tried did not yield any comprehensive understanding. If there are any other Korean speaking members please contact me and let's see what we can manage to translate!

Here is Khaibong's description:

Hope we can piece something together! With the help of many we can get this figured out quickly

The English translation could stand some cleaning up:

Vertical drainage wool for pipe tobacco plants are not tolerant .
+ Request characteristic of the breed : the manure composting techniques with ash and soil , to fertilize island bed liner on the inside . When medicinal plants have taken root , grow, then periodically watered by soaking mature manure , irrigation directly to each tree , about a week or 10 days once watered until fully developed medicinal plants is necessary . Break tops and branch review to ensure the quality of tobacco leaves .

Thanks Knucklehead, obviously we can make out some ideas but what I am most curious about is how they cure it. I have heard some mention that it is fire cured, while this info seems to not mention anything about it. I want to know what they do with the bamboo strips!

It kind of sounds like they are using them to string the leaf, but I can't say for sure.

Interesting looking leaves. They look more like One Sucker than any kind of Rustica I've seen.

The leaves look like Bosikappal, which is a primitive tobaccum type from India. But it looks like a much more developed plant than Bosikappal is. It doesn't look at all like a Rustica to me.

I agree too, it is some type of tabacum, but it does have a similar resemblance to boskkipal. What are those mats covering the plants?
