I've been working on trying to get someone to tie hands of Flue Cured Virginia tobacco for quite a few years and the waiting is finally over. This is the way all tobacco was processed when small farms produced the majority of the tobacco. Many farms were only a few acres, but their tobacco crop represented more than half of the farms annual income. Farmers took great pride in what they produced and graded ever leaf they harvested. After grading, all the tobacco was tied in hands to prepare it for market.

As the country grew and technology took over, tobacco processing became more automated. The new machinery couldn't process the hands without getting bound up and clogged the machines, so big tobacco told the farmers to stop tying the tobacco in hands. Some refused and when there crops were rejected at auction, they quit growing rather than lose the pride they took in their product. Today, almost all tobacco is mechanically harvested and processed. There is a recent post of a video with people stomping on the tobacco to get it to fit in the trailers while being harvested. They never would have done that 50 years ago.

Everybody has heard of the old saying "They don't make 'em like that anymore", well, they're right...until today.Hand Tied Lemon 2a.jpg

Both of these tobaccos are excellent smoking tobacco.

I recently received some of the hand tied lemon and have a question. First I’d like to say it’s some truly beautiful whole leaf tobacco. Very subtle and aroma. I’ve tried both smoking it on it’s own and blending it with other varieties of tobacco. The issue I’m having is it’s such a mild tobacco I have a hard time tasting it on it’s own and especially in a blend.
My question, is there a way to increase this leaf’s flavor characteristics?

You can stove the tobacco or blend it with a stronger tobacco. There's really no way to add flavor to a leaf that has been harvested.

You can let it set shredded in a container for a few weeks and the taste will be much better, in other words , age it.

This is what i did when i was have the same problem you had and i really was amazed by the taste.

Someone mentioned that after 3-6 months the flavor and smoothnes will be the maximum of what the tobacco will ever reach, but in theory, you can age for as long as you want.

Are the hand tied packages different from the original in taste or anything like that ,

And are the mid ribs removed when they’re tied ?

Thanks

Both hand tied varieties have ribs. I’m not sure if there’s any difference in taste from the originals. The flavor and smoke quality is outstanding on the bright leaf that’s for sure.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to try your suggestion on shredding and aging.

In my opinion, both Hand Tied types of tobacco we sell are among the best tobacco we've ever offered. With that being said, we just got this year's "Red" in today, and it is the best Red we've ever had. The tobacco has a very strong tobacco flavor and a high nicotine content. Being the highest stalk position, the leaves are very much like leather, so the tobacco will burn very slow, but the combustion is excellent even unblended.

We've never had a year like this as long as I've been in business.
