They're easier if they perch.

Update on the Prilep volunteers. They all seem to have gotten past the transplant shock. The Plants aren't receiving any direct sunlight yet, but they should be soon. They are on the south side of the house, under the eaves. At noon, the plants are 5 inches from the shadow line. I put a peg in the dirt at that line to see how much the shadow retreats each day.

The Shirazi and Harrow velvet seedlings are growing well. The Shirazi is outperforming the HV at this point and will be planted outdoors later this week.

Good looking seedlings. Compact and strong... must have the lights right down on them or outside. Good head on the light, esp. noting the shadow line. Attention to detail grows great plants.

Planted Shirazi outdoors this morning. It should be cloudy all day, the remnants of the storm are still over us. I don't expect much transplant shock.
Now, if I can only keep my G!@#$%M neighbors chickens away from them!!!

A few pics. These were transplanted 3 days ago, looks like they have doubled in size. Note the chicken damage on some of the leaves, it's not excessive, but still annoying. Lately, when I see chickens in my yard, I sic my boxer on them, he never actually catches one but at least they leave for a while. I complained to code enforcement about them. They seemed annoyed that I expected them to do their jobs. My tax dollars at work.

The last pic is the Harrow Velvet which will be planted in a few days along with a few pitiful looking tomatoes and poblano peppers.

Planted 25 Harrow Velvet outdoors. These were just a little smaller than the Shirazi at transplant.

Another pic of the Shirazi that was planted 4 days ago. Definite signs of growth each day.

Last, the Prilep are doing okay. They are shaded in the morning, but they are starting to get a little bit of sun around 1PM. Probably will be a few more weeks before they all start getting enough sun.

A few pics and observations. These pics were taken at 11AM. As you can see, the Prilep are still mostly shaded in the morning. By 1 or 2PM they are all getting some sun, but not nearly enough. There is some significant pest damage on a few of the plants, I haven't been able to determine what's causing it yet. The stunted ones on the end are probably infested with nematodes, I may pull one up later and inspect the roots.

The container plants are doing well, with hardly any pest damage. The larger plants are Shirazi, transplanted 18 days ago. Last evening, a few of them were laid over by heavy rain, but straightened up overnight. The Harrow were transplanted 4 days after the Shirazi, They are doing well , just not as vigorous a grower as the Shirazi.

BTW, I took some temperature readings on a sunny afternoon to see the differences between the white and the dark containers. The temps in the 2 white buckets measured, was 91 and 93 degrees. The temps in the 2 dark ones was 93 and 95 degrees. So there is some difference but not significant.

First 2 pics are Shirazi at 30 days. 4th and 5th pics are Harrow Velvet at 26 days.

Still a ways to go before they ripen, but so far I'm impressed with the Shirazi. If I get a decent yield and the nicotine content is high enough, I may just make it my main "bulk crop".

The last 2 pics are what I have been calling Prilep, but I'm beginning to have my doubts. It's flowering too early and the leaves don't have the crinkly edges. I grew some Ahus in containers in that same spot last fall and let one plant go to seed. I don't know if they could have remained viable for that long out in the elements, but they sure don't look like Prilep. These are volunteer plants. They're not looking good during the hottest part of the day.

I sprayed for worms this afternoon with BT. This morning I found a hornworm and several smaller caterpillars of a different type. The damage is not too bad yet, but I need to stay on top of it. Bad thing is, it rains almost every day this time of year.

Some of you may remember my screech owl nest box that was taken over by nesting woodpeckers. The woodpeckers have flown the coop and now, the box has been taken over by a swarm of honeybees.

Rum & Honey. Very nice case for Virginia gold Tobacco. Just mix and Spitz to suit your tastes. :p

I did a follow up spray with BT this morning. A few days after the first application, I found several dead caterpillars that were disintegrating on the leaves.

My Prilep in the first two photos aren't looking good at all.

The next 5 photos are Harrow velvet. They don't seem to like the container method much. The bottom leaves seem to be maturing already and it's only been about 34 days from transplant. Average height is about 18 inches.

Saved the best for last. The Shirazi are thriving, they are on average about 40 inches tall. I topped them last week and I've been breaking the suckers off as needed. The lower leaves are starting to thicken up.

I've been seeing a lot of large yellow butterflies on the underside of the tobacco leaves, so I applied some more BT today.

The Shirazi is thickening up and getting bumpy. I'm thinking about two weeks till first priming. The largest leaves are about 16 X 10 inches.

My veggie garden is sorely lacking. A few beefsteak tomatoes and two okra plants.

The Harrow Velvet, at first glance, looks like it's ripe. But the leaves are still thickening up. For some reason, they seem to be lacking in chlorophyll but still growing.

I had to include a pic of my smoked barracuda.

The Shirazi are ripening. The leaves are very thick compared to the Burley. Some of the plants look like they could be stalk harvested now, but I'm determined to let them yellow up more. Harvesting too early was my biggest mistake last fall.

I've been priming the Harrow as the tips and edges begin turning brown. The leaf on these is thin, but they have the bumpy texture and are very light in color. I have some dried already, It color cured nicely and smells pretty good already.

Got my seeds started for the winter crop. 32 Shirazi and 20 Trabzon 2. I'm sticking with the Shirazi because it did so well in the small containers and I'm giving the Trabzon 2 a trial because of the reportedly high nicotine content. They should be ready to plant out by mid October.

A few pictures of my color curing setup. It's very warm and humid on the lanai. Once they are color cured, I'll move them to the garage where it's much warmer and drier.

I stalk harvested a few of the Shirazi several days ago and they are coloring up well. Probably will stalk harvest the rest within the next week or so.

Last are a few pics of the harrow. I'm kind of on the fence if I ever want to grow it again. It was a pretty funky grow. I'll decide after it cures/ages and see if it passes the taste and strength test.

I'm still in the experimental stage, trying to find a few varieties that grow well in containers and will produce a good quality Snus.
