Week 13..
Aphids have moved in unfortunately last few days. There's a few ladybug larva I hope I see more.
Half tempted to harvest my largest ones but they've only just started to mature last few weeks so not sure if they'll be full potency, the largest leafs are 6 ish inches. Many are just starting to grow now so they'll need another few weeks luckily looks like a warm fall. But aphids worry me greatly they've come strong just last couple days.

I don't see any aphids in the photos. There are a number of dead gnats (notice the wings) along the stalk. They land; the nicotine from the trichomes (hairs) zaps them; they're dead.

Bob
There are quite a few crawling as well on others. But, so are you saying they are not much concern then ?

They are a pain in the butt, if they die on the leaves, but that's of concern only after color-curing, when you will need to brush them off (or smoke them).

Bob
These guys are a concern though right ? They seem to be yellow green or orange. Besides the black gnats

Not much to say, the big ones are not growing anymore last couple weeks. The small ones want to bush so I'll let them if they have any time too, I should have to begin with but oh well.
As of today I don't know if I'll be doing much to them maybe here and there on the large ones but besides that they can do what they want because I don't know what they want from me. I wish I just let them go wild they really did not tolerate having been clipped constantly, all leaves on the small ones have been there for weeeeeks and haven't grown at all and only put growth into side shoots. I may even let the matured plants just grow side shoots too since the mature leaves have been at a stand still for weeks
Oh well we live and learn.

Your plants look very similar in height and leaf size as the Hopi N. rustica I grew last year. My plants finished up in late June. I'm guessing that the variety you are growing has similar genetics to what I grew. If that's true, I'd say don't expect much more from your plants in terms of height, leaf count and leaf size. None of my plants put out any leaves any bigger than my hand. Also, I tried pinching the flower buds and decided it was an effort in futility. In the end, I couldn't tell which ones I topped and didn't top because they seriously want to push out flowers. There basically was no stopping it.

Yah I regret deeply keeping them "plucked" I'm hoping a couple more will grow out to maturity though I believe most of my efforts were wasted. Next year I'm letting them do what they want I will remove flowers when I see them but besides that... couple of my larger plants are results of being ignored for a bit and the offshoots taking off. Idk regardless learned a lot.
I'm not sure on the type of rustica on the site it just says wild aztec rustica. From what I've read though these are pretty standard yah

Not much to report, will let them go till there's frost, many small plants will be nothing I will let them go into frost to see how cold they can really go. Maybe some smaller ones off shoots will take off in the next week or so but not getting my hopes up, weather can drop at any moment at this point of the year. I shouldn't of ever restricted their growth/ got rid of offshoots. This plant does not like it.

Doing oooki.
Week 15 or something mental like that.
Week #1 of letting all the offshoots take over, this is officially a sucker crop. I will keep all the old mature leaves that have been here for a month or so now, to themselves. Im excited to see the difference in potency how much difference it makes etc
I pick flower if I see em but other that that they are to do what they want
I'm being blessed with a very warm fall. So perhaps there's a little hope for others. I will be testing some of these to see how cold they can really tolerate.
I have decided I will be towel curing them as it seems to be most reliable way to color cure them from my endless Google searching and I haven't time to hang outside. First night it gets into freezing is suppose to be 3-4 weeks away. Had some aphids and gnats they've disappeared since the army of hundreds of ladybugs have came out.
Between the shade and the endless hail that killed them off repeatedly, and then the dry dry sun and then the floodin, in the first half I'm honestly just happy I have a few that look half decent. Enough to experiment with curing and I have learned so much growing these guys. I'm just getting excited for next season to try to put into practice what ive learned now haha
If you managed to read any of my ramblings, hope you have a good rest of your day .

Yeah, yours looks so much like mine did, including the runts. I had a lot of runts that were not much more than 8inches tall.
I'm curious to hear how yours turn out after you color cure them. On mine, the leaves were thick whilst on the plant but became very thin and delicate after curing and drying. I added some casing to some last night and am curious what that will do for them.

I bought some whole leaf N. rustica from an online vendor and it is totally different from what I grew. I'm thinking about posting a thread about comparing the two.

Ah interesting!
All of my runts are about 8 inch as well hoping some of the suckers are able to shoot up. I should have let them go to begin with I don't think this is a plant to restrict suckers. Flowers cut is fine but if you keep on-top of suckers it just continues to put effort into new suckers and stays stagnant.
As far as I know? I think it's Mohawk strain, it seems to be the most accurate. Just matching with pictures on Google at least. They keep small leaf and stay smaller.
And that would be interesting too see !
