I may be mistaken, my growing experience is limited to tobacco. Do the Nicotianas have a high number of freaks compared to other domesticated plants?

this summer i have to take a closer look at some of my plants and see if the capsules are that hairy. i guess i am not very observant while working in the garden. those plants look sticky, are they?

I've never really considered rustica sticky. Not all trichomes (hairs) are the exuding type. Some are more or less a physical deterrent for small insects.

I don't think there's any reason it should be, but I've definitely never seen capsules like that before. I've seen single valve, multi-valve, and unequally partitioned valves but never absent exterior walls before.

So I believe this is the button stage of the N. cordifolia. It's developing very slowly but I'm hoping it will flower soon-ish.

I was pulling leaves off plants to help with watering and discovered that both the N. otophora (above) and the N. tomentosa (below) like to produce ground suckers even before the main stalk flowers

But do you see that little plantlet off to the side? Seed contamination you say?

Apparently not. The N. tomentosa are forming plantlets off their exposed roots! It's the damnedest thing I've ever seen!

i guess you could end up with a tobacco patch if they grew quick enough. i grow milkweed for monarch butterflies and it does the same thing. i never knew it until someone wanted a few plants and didn't wan't seeds so i dug up a few.

Well I didn't know about it but apparently TH Goodspeed did. From The Genus Nicotiana (1954), page 61:

"...N. tomentosa and N. setchellii, rootsprout vigorously, especially near the stem, and often detached segments of roots also form shoots. With reduced self-fertility, vegetative propagation doubtless largely accounts for the considerable thickets which N. tomentosa forms in such favored habitats as the valley bottom of the Rio Urubamba near Machu Picchu, Dept. Cuzco, Peru."

This thread is really great. For the third time I really enjoy all those photos and plants. N.Cordifolia and N.Acuminata are my favorite so far for growing.
Maybe we will get some seeds to try those nice flowers. Thanks Jessica for great effort and Beautiful photos.

i like computers when they work rite. i hope you have luck with the changes. they usually get the problems straitened out before they change something else.
