I promised somebody some 40% shade cloth 15' X 30' and I forget who. Please PM me and remind me. The snow is gone enough I can get at it now. Thanks.

John, I have some questions. I saw a lot of photos but I don't know more about the shade cloth. Which type of fabric do you use; woven, knitted or nonwoven ? Also, what's the material of the fabric; polyester, polypropylene ... ? One more, what's the height of the shade cloth (or tent) while growing your plants ?

The stuff I get is 40% shade. I get it from a friend who has many acres under shade. For him it is useless as it has holes and rips won't work on his scale of things. He has huge amounts of the stuff wrapped in loose balls about a meter in diameter. He freely gives me as much as I want. So far I took one ball. It filled the back of my hatchback. I don't use it much any more as I discovered I have about enough natural shade as I need. His fields are set at 9' so he can get machines under it for planting, spraying, harvesting and such. I' not sure of it's composition but it is plastic. It doesn't stretch much so I'm guessing not nylon. It is off white and translucent. It doesn't seem as "splintery" as poly pro so I guessing polyethylene. He gets it in rolls that are 15' wide and looooong.

BTW He doesn't top anything. He says it makes the leaves tougher and most of his plants grow up into the cloth.

Hope this helps. -·-

Emre, I've been growing with shade cloth for about 5 years. In the past I've used 40% black shade cloth. I do not think it matters if it is woven or knitted. My shade "tent" is 8 feet tall. The only plant that grew higher than 8 feet was Conneticut Shade. Last year I grew Florida Sumatra and Vuelta Abajo and there were no height problems. John sent me some shade cloth last year and I plant to use it this year.

John, thank you.

Randy, using a black cloth may made inside very hot, have you ever noticed a heat problem in the tent ? BTW, I don't know if you use a fuly or partially closed tent.

My friend shades the top (single thickness) and all sides with several thicknesses and it is warmer inside the tent even though some air movement is noticeable. It gives pretty good tho not perfect insect and bird protection also.
